Plato Alexander, MD

I am a cardiac critical care physician at Manning Family Children’s Hospital and an associate professor at LSU School of Medicine. I bring more than a decade of experience in pediatric critical care, with a specialized focus on children with complex cardiac conditions.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University and received my medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center. I completed my pediatric residency at the University of South Florida and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, where I also served an additional year as chief resident. I then pursued fellowship training in pediatric critical care medicine at Duke Children’s Hospital.

Following my fellowship, I spent 11 years in the cardiac intensive care unit at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, where I developed extensive expertise in managing critically ill cardiac patients. I am double board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics.

In addition to my medical training, I earned an Executive MBA from the University of Miami in 2015, further enhancing my leadership and healthcare management skills.

I joined the team at Manning Family Children’s Hospital in 2025, where I continue to provide expert, compassionate care to pediatric patients and families facing complex cardiac challenges. I am excited to be in New Orleans and look forward to becoming an active member of the community.

Why I became a healthcare provider: My decision to pursue a career in medicine was driven by a desire to help people in a direct and meaningful way—that is what drives me emotionally. Intellectually, I enjoy the challenge of the work; it demands deep understanding and the ability to collaborate as a team to provide the best care possible.

A little something extra: I value the “therapeutic moment,” the point of connection between physician and patient. I believe that healing is influenced by the presence and intention I bring to the bedside. If I can bring a calm, peaceful spirit to that space, patients often tune into that, which helps in the healing process.
