Charles Hemenway, MD

Dr. Charles Hemenway is a specialist who treats blood diseases and cancer in children, adolescents, and young adults. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Florida. This was followed by a fellowship in pediatric hematology and oncology at Duke University where the first umbilical cord blood transplants in this country were being performed. While at Duke, he received a doctoral degree in Genetics. His first job was at Tulane University where he developed a research program that was supported by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the National Cancer Institute, and several other funding sources. Following Hurricane Katrina, he relocated his family and research lab to Loyola University Chicago where he held an endowed professorship for 15 years. He returned to his hometown, New Orleans, in 2022 to lead the Hematology and Oncology program at Children’s Hospital. He considers himself a generalist and is happy to see children with a diverse range of blood disorders and cancers. Dr. Hemenway remains passionate about his work to this day.

My little something extra: I was at the very first New Orleans Saints game. It was played at the old Tulane Stadium. While exciting, it was hot in the sun, and the Saints lost.
